HOW TO SQUARE A BLANK PROCEDURE CHART - PDF Printable

While there are several different methods to square a blank on a cutting shear; this procedure makes it easy to remember.  Several variables are assumed to be correct on the shear:  squaring arm is square to shear blade, shear machine has a square back gauge, shear blades are sharp and the procedure is followed.

The charts are based on hydraulic shears, but can be used for mechanical shear as well.  Some common hydraulic shears would Accurpress, Accurshear, Pacific, Standard, Amada, Piranha and others.  Shearing a square blank as shown in the figure below:  If your side gauge and squaring gauge are properly adjusted, this procedure will eliminate most of the normal inaccuracy associated in shearing or re-squaring blanks.

For accurate shearing, the shear must be level, the shear knifes must be sharp, side gauge must be set-up properly, the shear backgauge be adjusted parallel with the shear blades and the ram gibs set to the recommend clearance.
